Volcanic and steep: the interior takes 3,500 mm a year while the northern coastal strip where most people live takes under 1,500 mm. The island's rivers are short and fall fast, so the flooding hazard is measured in hours — Hurricane Tomas in 2010 did most of its damage as landslides rather than wind.
