Altitude is the whole story. Guatemala City sits at 1,500 m and holds 20 °C most of the year, while Puerto Barrios on the Caribbean coast is hot and takes better than 3,000 mm of rain. The wet season runs May to October — invierno, whatever the calendar says — and the Pacific slope drains it in flash floods off some of the steepest volcanic terrain in the hemisphere.
